Alex Nguyen finishes 5th at Cadet Body Bar National Championships

Former WWC wrestler Alex Nguyen finished 5th at the UWW Cadet Women’s nationals. Nguyen in her first year of eligibility went 5-2 on the day to finish 5th. Her first of the day proved the toughest as she come out the wrong end of a 10-0 TF to the eventual 3rd place finisher Brenda Renya. Nguyen then won 4 straight in the wrestlebacks including a fall and two techs, before failing 2-0 to the returning national champ in the consolation semifinals.

Great job Alex. We’re sure you’ll improve and be back next year.

WWC wrestler Nick Glanden takes 3rd at Annapolis MAWA District

WWC member Nick Glanden had a strong showing and went 3-1 to place 3rd at the Annapolis Christian School MAWA District tournament on Saturday. It was a great performance to earn a berth at the regional in Sailbury April 11th and 12th. Glanden will join teammates Gunther (open 142), Grasso (Open 190), and Ficker (220) who had all qualified last weekend through the Faquier District in Salibury.

Congratulations Nick.

Three WWC wrestlers advance to MAWA South Regional

Three WWC members earned berths in the MAWA South Regional Tournament with strong finishes at the Faquier District MAWA this weekend including runner-up Stephen Gunther (Open 142lbs), Piero Grasso (3rd Open 190) and Flynn Ficker (4th Open 220). The top three at the district tournament advance to the regional in Salisbury with the top 4 in Salisbury advancing to the Eastern Nationals (also in Salisbury). Ficker had a strong performance and despite dropping two close decisions to finish 4th qualified for the regional since one of the other placewinners declined to participate. Former WWC member Nathaniel Barbee won the 125 open category.

Also reaching the podium for the club, but not advancing to Salibury were Chris Page (4th open 142) and Jason Perkins (4th Open 190). Other club members competing in the event were Taylor Barnard (Open 150), Carlo Grasso (Advanced 171) and Nick Glanden (Open 190), and Brian Page (Open 220). The open 190lbs division was a real log jam for the WWC with three entries who all wrestled one another at some point in the bracket.

Great work getting on the mat gentlemen and good luck in Salisbury.
